ORI Issues Final Rule on Research Misconduct

September 19, 2024

Lewis-Burke has provided campus with a report about the Office of Research Integrity within the DHHS's final rule to update the 2005 regulation addressing research misconduct in Public Health Service (PHS) funded research.  The 2005 regulation was finalized prior to ORI’s establishment, and policy developments regarding research misconduct.  Among the policy and technological developments identified by ORI since 2005 include “the 2008 NIH Public Access policy; the 2023 NIH Data Management and Sharing policy; the shift to saving data on the cloud; and the ability to use artificial intelligence to detect image falsification, among many other developments.”  The final rule reflects changes from the proposed rule released last fall in response to community concerns. The rule applies to all institutions receiving funding from HHS, including the NIH.
