The Networking and Information Technology Research and Development (NITRD) National Coordination Office (NCO) on behalf of the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) has released a Request for Information (RFI) to inform a new National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Research and Development (R&D) Strategic Plan. The RFI for an updated plan seeks to identify what steps in AI R&D need to be taken by the federal government over the next three to five years to secure U.S. leadership in AI innovation, strengthen economic and national security, and “promote human flourishing.” Additionally, the RFI calls for “novel mechanisms for research partnerships” across industry and academia, as well as research areas that are unlikely to be addressed by industry R&D efforts.
The purpose of this RFI is to gather suggestions for revising the 2023 iteration of the National AI R&D Strategic Plan. According to the RFI, the new AI R&D Strategic Plan will be more aligned with the Trump Administration's Executive Order on Removing Barriers to American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence, as well as the forthcoming AI Action Plan, which received public comments through a similar RFI process in March.
Responses must be submitted by May 29, 2025, by 11:59 PM ET. Responses from the public will be accepted, especially AI researchers, industry stakeholders, and others “directly engaged in or affected by AI R&D.”
