Congressional Update: Senate Appropriations Committee Holds Hearing on Biomedical Research Innovation

On April 30, the Senate Appropriations Committee, led by Chairwoman Susan Collins (R-ME), hosted a hearing on “Biomedical Research: Keeping America’s Edge in Innovation” to discuss the impacts of reducing federal funding for biomedical research. The witnesses included Dr. Sudip Parikh, the CEO and Executive Publisher at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS); Dr. Hermann Haller, President of the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory; Dr. Cartier Esham, Executive Director at the Alliance for a Stronger Food and Drug Administration; Dr. Barry Paul Sleckman, Director of the University of Alabama at Birmingham O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center; and Mrs. Emily Stenson, a mother to a child treated for cancer. Witnesses emphasized the importance of continued funding for biomedical research, highlighting its crucial role in advancing and preserving the United States’ leadership in science, research, and technology.
