Several powerful databases and search engines are available to help UC Berkeley faculty, staff and students identify potential sources of research funding.
- Pivot(link is external): Previously known as Community of Science (COS), this comprehensive funding opportunities database is freely accessible to the campus community through UC Berkeley's institutional subscription. You can use Pivot to search for solicitations by specific research areas, funding mechanisms (e.g., grants, fellowships, awards), types of funder (federal, state, local, public, private sector), and other parameters. The following links can get you started:
- Pivot Users' Guide: Updated version, based on the Guide created by the UC Berkeley Sponsored Projects Office (SPO). Note that as of March 1, 2019 Pivot has a new url: https://pivot.proquest.com(link is external)
- Short instructional videos(link is external): ProQuest, the company that distributes Pivot, maintains a YouTube channel with many helpful training demonstrations.
- If you need further assistance, BRDO can help; please contact us.
- Foundation Directory Online(link is external): Funding opportunities from U.S. foundations, corporate giving programs, public charities, and a growing number of international sources. This online database is available to the campus community through the UC Berkeley library, and can also be used remotely with your CalNet ID or UC Berkeley library login.
In addition, the following free websites provide listings of federal funding opportunities:
- Grants.gov(link is external): Provides a common website for federal agencies to post funding opportunities and for grantees to find and apply to them. Grants.gov can be searched by government agency, date, funding activity category, funding instrument type, and funding agency.
- Federal Grants Wire(link is external): A free resource that includes current information on federal grants and loans. Opportunities can be searched by applicant type, subject, government agency, or assistance type.
