Lewis-Burke Associates has provided campus with a report about the new Global Centers (GC) solicitation from the National Science Foundation (NSF). This is the second GC competition and will focus on Use-Inspired Research Addressing the Bioeconomy. This is an NSF-wide activity in partnership with the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), and research funders from Canada, the United Kingdom (UK), and new for this competition, the Republic of Korea, Japan, and Finland. Proposals must include researchers from the U.S. and at least one partner country. NSF plans to make five to seven awards funded at up to $5 million for up to five years. Proposals are due June 11, 2024.
Proposals should focus on research that will accelerate scientific understanding of biological systems to develop goods and services that can be utilized in “agriculture, health, security, manufacturing, energy, and environmental sectors of the global economy; or that provide access to unique systems that help us understand the processes and issues that we can use biotechnology to solve.” Bioeconomy research builds on research in biology and engineering, as well as chemistry, materials science, geosciences, mathematics, data sciences, and the social sciences.
