ASA Releases Research Opportunities in Earth Sciences
On July 10, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences (ROSES) was released which solicitates proposals for a variety of projects relevant to NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, including the Earth Science Research, Applied Sciences, Technology, and Data Systems Programs. The Earth Science Division (ESD) is sponsoring opportunities that address challenges stemming from environmental change by increasing the understanding of Earth’s systems and climate. Please find more information about NASA's Earth Science Research Program here. Specific pre-proposal information will be posted under other documents on the NSPIRES page for each program element.
Upcoming Earth science and environmental opportunities through the Earth Science Research Program include:
-
Water Quality Applications is seeking proposals that use Earth observation data to improve water quality management, protect communities, and increase the availability of safe water resources. The award is expected to be around $1.5 million over three years. A pre-proposal teleconference will be held approximately 5 weeks after release of ROSES-25. Notices of Intent aredue on August 19, 2025.
-
Earth Venture is soliciting proposals for membership on the Science and Application teams forTROPICS andPREFIRE. The expected annual program budget for new awards is up to $1 million per year for a maximum of three years. Submissions are due on September 18, 2025.due on September 18, 2025.
-
Water Resources Applications is accepting proposals involving decision-support tools for water resources management using Earth observation data. A pre-proposal teleconference will be held approximately 6 weeks after the release of ROSES-25. The expected award is around $3 million over three years. Submissions are due on September 5, 2025.
-
User-Center Applications with Large Earth Foundation Models is looking to support projects that consider the development of decision-support tools based on large Earth foundation models for a specific end user. Projects that address the needs of economic sectors, such as insurance, real estate, infrastructure, and transportation, may be given priority. A pre-proposal webinar for this solicitation approximately 3 weeks after the release of ROSES-25. The award is for a maximum of $2 million per year for up to three years. Submissions are due on November 4, 2025.
-
Rapid Response and Novel Research in Earth Science is soliciting applications pertaining to quick-response research and rapid data acquisition on natural or anthropogenic extreme events, as well as novel ideas to advance Earth remote sensing that NASA has not proposed in the last three years. No specific award budget is specified. There is no due date for submissions.
-
INNOVATE is looking for proposals that use satellite observations of Earth to support U.S. economic and national security interests, with the intent to support high-risk, high-reward projects that are too speculative to receive other awards. Awards will be up to $1 million over three years. Proposers must contact the Program Officer prior to submission to ensure project eligibility. There is no due date for submissions.
